Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"
Directions: (Schedule subject to change)
Day 1 Watch the 35 minute Disney Film "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Afterwards, break up into groups of four and discuss the movie. After your discussion, write a detailed summary of the film.
After the film, the instructor will use Irving's short story to model how to interpret and paraphrase the meaning of difficult text. Finally, students will work with their group to interpret and paraphrase the first paragraph of the story.
Day 2-3 Students will continue to read the urban legend, interpreting the difficult text and rewriting the story through their own paraphrasing.
Day 4 After rewriting the story, students must condense the 70 paragraph short story into 20 paragraphs, which will be 10 front and back pages of an illustrated, children's book.
Day 5-6 Students will type and print their edited, finalized version of the urban legend. Finally, students must bring in their own materials in order to illustrate and publish their version of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."
